Chapter Fifteen

Ellie winced when she heard Derek curse at something on his computer screen. She decided not to ask, though she could whole-heartedly relate to his frustration, and possible feeling of failure. Despite her determination to stay focused, she could feel it catching up to her as well.

There was nothing she could do about Shriver at the moment, as there was no witness and little evidence other than his own megalomania tying him to Pratt’s death. They had both visited the prison chapel. The chaplain couldn’t confirm whether or not they had ever interacted. Shriver wasn’t going to help them without corroborating evidence against him, some kind of proof that he had really given those names to someone.

Ellie couldn’t help thinking about Janine. She wanted to prove everyone wrong who thought the story always ended the same way: Darren, maybe even Janine. She had trusted them once, but obviously not enough to think they’d protect her. Or, in the worst-case scenario, she’d never left on her own.

She might already be dead.

Ellie suppressed a groan. She knew the case was in good hands with her colleagues, who had the resources they needed to get to the bottom of those disappearances and deaths. Still.

She’d promised Darren that she wasn’t going to give up—that she wasn’t one of those cops, and for some reason, he had seemed to believe her. She couldn’t let him down, or herself. At least neither Daniels nor Jordan intended to shut her out completely.

Again, she looked over at Derek but was jolted out of her thoughts when Detective Rogers came heading her way.

“Harding, I got some news for you,” he said. “Officers were called to a domestic disturbance, ex-boyfriend violating a restraining order. Her friend got in the middle of it. It’s Janine.”

Ellie was on her feet in an instant. “How is she?”

“He punched her. They’re checking her out at the hospital right now. Carpenter’s not here. Do you want to come?”

She wanted to. This was exciting news.

“I should check with Jordan first,” she said.

“Do that. But hurry up.”

“Okay. I’ll meet you outside.” Ellie picked up her phone and chose Jordan’s number, hoping she’d pick up. To her relief, she did so after one ring.

“Hey,” she started without preamble. “Rogers found Janine. She’s at the hospital right now. Could I go with him? I would like to check on her, but if you think I shouldn’t…”

“No, that’s fine, go,” Jordan told her. “I’m heading to the tech lab now. This might take a while. Find out what you can, and we’ll meet at the station later?”

“Of course. Thank you.”

After ending the call, she quickly updated Maria. “I shouldn’t be long. You call me if you need me?”

“Sure. If for some miracle Shriver decides to talk, I can handle it.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

Ellie picked up her coat and keys and hurried to meet Rogers at his car. They would report back to Jordan and Derek later. She had additional reasons for wanting to make sure Janine was okay, but Ellie couldn’t help wondering if the threads would start to unravel.
